• "It makes me want to ask [students], 'Want fries with that order?' "

Some recent a.secret posts (the thankless student, the angry student, not-helpful-my-ass) seem to reflect the findings of a recent study reported in the LA Times and the Christian Science Monitor about the narcissism of the current generation of college students.

I wonder whether they really are more self-centered than they used to be...

I don't think it's just college students, I think it's kids (and some young adults) in general.

I vacillate between thinking "kids these days" and "that was me, ten years ago." Usually I can figure out where the particular student or event falls, but one that happened yeterday had me stumped:

A graduate student in my department who seems like one of our best, albeit sometimes unmotivated and often unable to think outside the box, students shared her "good news" with me. She's pregnant and due in October. She, who is going to be on the market in the fall. She, who has a summer position overseas. She, who took a prestigious fellowship next year 100+ miles from her partner. She, who just got married and has no family nearby. She, who self-admittedly has no idea about kids or families or anything, and who has a hard time keeping stuff together for her and her partner. She, who really wants to travel.

I can't decide if she's someone I don't recognize or closer to a mirror image of who I was eight years ago.

Hey, how are we supposed to tell them that they have to change their egocentric attitudes so this world won't be ruled by selfish little brats in a couple of decades if you depend on student evaluations in the end of the semester?
